A temporary fix is better than nothing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carbon dioxide is easy to release and extraordinarily difficult to remove. After decades of fossil-fuel combustion, the excess CO\u2082 already in the atmosphere will influence the climate for centuries or longer. According to Philip E. Mason, removing it directly would cost hundreds of trillions of dollars, even under optimistic assumptions about future technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distinction is crucial. Aerosols would not remove carbon dioxide, reverse ocean acidification or eliminate the need to reduce emissions. They would temporarily offset part of the warming while natural carbon sinks gradually absorb some of the excess. The cooling would require continued maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why particle size matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The challenge is producing particles with the right optical properties. Sulfur dioxide can form reflective sulfate aerosols, but those particles eventually fall out of the atmosphere, and the resulting chemistry raises environmental concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mason is investigating a different route: using sodium to produce aerosols that could ultimately form sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research began with experiments involving sodium\u2013potassium alloy and water. Subsequent tests introduced steam and specialized misting nozzles to control how the alloy disperses and burns. High-speed cameras revealed a blue haze consistent with very small particles capable of scattering light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mason’s experiments suggest that the process can produce aerosols within the desired size range, at least under laboratory conditions. The remaining challenge is finding the right operating conditions and engineering a system that could work reliably at an enormous scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intervention would have to be maintained for as long as greenhouse-gas concentrations continued to produce excess warming. Stopping the intervention without addressing emissions would therefore allow much of the offsetting cooling to disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That dependence is both a technical challenge and a political liability. Governments would need to cooperate over decades, establish rules for deployment and accept responsibility for maintaining a system whose failure could expose the underlying warming rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mason nevertheless argues that research into such measures should not be excluded before the technology has been properly tested. He criticizes restrictions and moratoria on climate-engineering research, contending that political resistance is preventing investigation of an option that could be considerably cheaper than either large-scale carbon removal or paying the full cost of climate damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has pursued European Research Council funding for his sodium-aerosol experiments and says he intends to continue developing the idea even without the grant. By publishing his work openly, he also hopes to prevent the proposal from being locked away through patents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A century to get the balance right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mason’s central argument is that temporary cooling could buy humanity valuable time. Emissions would still need to fall, and atmospheric CO\u2082 would still need to be dealt with. But a supplementary cooling measure could, in his calculations, reduce near-term warming at a fraction of the projected cost of removing the accumulated carbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal remains a research project, not a ready-made planetary thermostat. Its value will depend on whether the chemistry, particle production, environmental consequences and large-scale deployment can be demonstrated to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Mason, that uncertainty is a reason to investigate the idea, not to dismiss it. A century is a long time to maintain a climate intervention\u2014but also a long time for cleaner energy, carbon removal and other technologies to advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The immediate question is whether we are willing to investigate a potential means of buying that time before the bill for delay becomes even larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
