Some findings are correlational, so a change that coincides with smartphone adoption does not automatically establish that technology caused it.

1. The original studies

GPS and spatial memory — Dahmani & Bohbot, McGill, 2020. Among 50 regular drivers, habitual GPS use was associated with poorer spatial memory during subsequent self-guided navigation. This was a small study of adults, not children. Published in Scientific Reports.

Teenagers meeting friends in person — Twenge, Spitzberg & Campbell, 2019. Analysis of nationally representative adolescent and college-student samples covering 1976–2017, with a combined sample of 8.2 million. College-bound high-school seniors in 2016 spent roughly one hour less per day socializing face-to-face than seniors in the late 1980s. Loneliness rose sharply after 2011. This is a generational comparison, not proof that social media directly caused the decline.

Entertainment screen time — Common Sense Media, 2021. Children aged 8–12 averaged 5 hours 33 minutes of daily entertainment screen use; teens aged 13–18 averaged 8 hours 39 minutes. Between 2019 and 2021, averages rose by 49 minutes and 77 minutes, respectively. The pandemic period is an important confounding factor.

Teen employment — US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The employment–population ratio for 16–19-year-olds was 60.1% in July 1978 and 53.5% in July 2000. The 2026 figure cited in the original research summary was 36.5%. Summer employment has fallen substantially, reducing one traditional route to earning money, workplace experience and responsibility and substituting it with a childhood relationship with big tech.

Driver’s licences — Sivak & Schoettle, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, 2012. The percentage of 19-year-olds with a licence fell from 87.3% in 1983 to 69.5% in 2010. This establishes declining driving independence, but does not prove that today’s teenagers perceive driving as a burden.

The marshmallow test — Watts, Duncan & Quan, 2018. Researchers compared data from 840 children aged 3–5 tested in the late 1960s, 1980s and 2000s. Children in the 2000s waited an average of two minutes longer than children in the 1960s, and one minute longer than children in the 1980s. The result contradicts the assumption that children have simply become less patient. It measures delay of gratification in one task, not patience generally, and the sample came from similar middle-to-higher socioeconomic backgrounds.

2. Teens were more likely to describe negative effects on their peers than on themselves.

Pew Research Center, 2022 — social pressure. Thirty-eight percent of teens felt overwhelmed by social-media drama; 31% felt left out, 29% felt pressure to post for likes or comments, and 23% said social media made them feel worse about their own lives. Girls reported several of these experiences more often than boys.

Instagram’s internal research, disclosed in 2021. A company research slide reported that one in three teenage girls who already experienced body-image issues said Instagram made those issues worse. Canadian privacy investigations documented the potential exposure of approximately 87 million Facebook users worldwide through the underlying app, and the use of psychological profiles in political messaging. This establishes that large-scale behavioral profiling and targeted political communication were real practices. It does not establish that every claimed political effect was achieved.

FTC surveillance report, 2024. The FTC examined data practices at nine major social-media and video-streaming companies, including Meta, YouTube, TikTok and Snap.
